St Virgin Mary and Child are portrayed wearing crowns. The Child, who is sitting on his Mother’s lap, is holding one hand up in benediction and holding a book, which is a symbol of Gospel, or the Apple of the World, which is a symbol of power. The blue colour of Mary’s cloak signifies the purity of the Heavenly Queen, the red and white of the Child’s garment, the earthly nature and the innocence of the Saviour. The plot is based on the Gospel statements about the divine Motherhood of Mary, for she was chosen by God to be the earthly mother of Jesus Christ and endure his Passion to save the mankind.
