This is one of many drawing exercises from the Paris period of Stasys Ušinskas (1905–1974). On looking at the picture, two things become quite clear. Firstly, Ušinskas’ ideal woman was rather far from the trendless sylphs of the Romantics. Secondly, Art Deco, which flourished in interwar Paris, was in line with the perception of modern expression and the latest endeavours in art by the young Lithuanian holder of an art bursary. Ušinskas’ work was studied by Nijolė Tumėnienė.
