Author: Drexel Jeremiah, 1581 - 1638

Title: Gymnasium patientiae.

Title in English: The Gymnasium of Patience.

Monachii [Munich]: apud Cornelium Leysserium, 1630.

Format: 12mo, [12] leaves, 523. With etched title-page and 3 full-page etched emblematic plates by Philipe Sadeler.

Binding: contemporary vellum (wraping).

Second edition, published same year and same city as first but with different engravings, of this devotional book on Christian tolerance by the eminent German Jesuit preacher Jeremiah Drexel (1581 - 1638). The first edition, published by Nikolaus Heinrich, was illustrated with an engraved title and three plates by Raphael Sadeler. This edition is illustrated with a title and three plates all finely etched and signed by Philip Sadeler who, according to Benezit, was Raphael's brother. An interesting example of competing publishers getting a popular author's work to market. There was a total of four editions published in 1630 according to the Corpus Librorum Emblematum (Jesuit series). The dedication is to Albert Stanislaus Radzilvill, Grand Duke of Lithuania (dated Sept. 1629).

Provenance: contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf ("norberli goethals"); name crossed out on title and following leaf; early collectors stamps on first text page.
