Pranas Simanavičius

Art lovers still valued naturalistic imagery in the first half of the 20th century when Modernism was at its peak. At the time, it was thought that an artist had to reject tradition and indulge in experimentation in order to demonstrate his ingenuity and originality. However, PRANAS SIMANAVIČIUS (1905–1962), an art teacher at Rokiškis gymnasium, combined artistic talent with technical skill. This attitude was considered amateurish, but today, Simanavičius’ ability to represent precisely the physical features of the objects he painted is appealing, along with the moderate colouring of his pictures and the way they emanate the lazy tranquillity of the countryside.
